Building the perfect calm-down corner

A simple guide to creating a cozy, low-stress retreat your pet will actually use.

Building the perfect calm-down corner

Every pet — anxious or not — deserves a spot in the home that says “you can switch off here.” A calm-down corner is exactly that: a small, predictable, low-stimulation retreat.

Done right, it becomes the place they go to during fireworks, family chaos, or just a busy afternoon.

Pick the right spot

Choose a low-traffic corner that isn’t on the main route between rooms. Tucked next to a sofa, under a console table, or in a quiet hallway nook works well.

Avoid kitchens (too much noise), front entryways (too much arrival energy), and anywhere with direct sunlight at peak hours.

Layer in the textures

Start with a plush, supportive base — an orthopedic bed or a deep sherpa blanket. Add a soft throw your pet can burrow into, and a folded sweatshirt that smells like you.

Soft, contained spaces lower stress. Donut-shaped beds with raised walls and covered hideaways are especially effective for anxious sleepers.

Make it predictable

Consistency is what turns a bed into a safe space. Keep the corner in the same spot, don’t wash everything at once (familiar smells matter), and don’t use it as a punishment zone.

If you want to actively reinforce it, scatter a few treats there at random times each day. Within a week, you’ll catch your pet retreating there on their own.
